Grants For School

A grant of £1947 for exterior painting and a grant of £BO3 16s for gymnasium equipment had been made to the Riccarton High School, the school’s board of governors was told in letters from (the Education Department. ] The estimated roll at ths i school next year was 840, the headmaster (Mr A. J. Gainsford) reported. The average roll during September and October was 708. Seven Malaysian students had been accepted for the school and about 10 more were expected. Since the last meeting he had received about 40 applications from such students, Mr Gainsford said. A group of up to 17 such students would fit into other classes but would be a useful group for special English lessons. He thought the students would provide “. . . a shot in the arm . . .” for the school’s students. The Malaysian students were good students and could teach the New Zealanders something about learning. On the subject of extraterritorial classrooms, such as mountain huts—Mr Gainsford said they were a wonderful idea. The board declared itself in favour of such facilities and and decided to inquire if other schools were interested in co-operating in the establishment of a hut. It was also decided to write to the Paparua County Council expressing concern at the narrowness of the seal in Waterloo road, which forced pupils on cycles to ride well 'out in the road. The board i was also concerned that the road was in a 55 miles an 'hour speed limit.
