TROTTING Bass Strait Strong Oamaru Prospect

The last-start winners, Bass Strait and Newport Maid, could form the winning T.A.B. double combination on the first day of the Oamaru Trotting Club’s spring meeting tomorrow.

Bass Strait won over two miles—the distance of tomorrow’s race—at Forbury Park last week. Bass Strait received a gram un when he won. The Oam iru field is small and C. C )evine should not find it har< o go a long way to firn itooVot -Rolrlc than that whirl

weaker fields tnan tnat wmcn he beat at Forbury Park and

that which he will oppose at Oamaru. Winfield Chief has seldom paced a bad race in the last six months. He was a useful fourth over two miles in the Ellesmere Handicap, won by Powerful Light at Motukarara on October 8. He has had a i chance to freshen since then and could make Bass Strait work hard for a second win. Abbey Frost, eighth at Motukarara. Eyreton, Tryout, Thunderina and W’hy Not. are all capable of adding interest to the finish. Newport Maid has drawn badly in the second leg, the Weston Handicap, but that might not stop her winning. She was most impressive when she won over 10 furlongs at Motukarara on October 8 at her most recent start. Nocatchem could do better on the grass at Oamaru than she has in some of her appearances on dirt tracks. She

has great ability and if allowed to make her own rules, will take beating. Student, Golden Garry, Mon Arnie, Moneywise, Torpi and Trade Winds are others expected to show to advantage. The on-course double will be on the First Redcastle and First Tapui Handicaps. Fair weather is forecast and the track will be fast.
