Gap Between Pay And Awards Seen
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 20. The unhappy position of industrial disputes would no doubt continue while employers refused to face up to the realities of writing into awards and industrial agreements rates of pay more in line with those actually paid, the president of the Auckland Trades Council (Mr T. E. Skinner) says in his annual report to be tabled tonight.
Executive officers of the council had been kept extremely busy in assisting to settle disputes satisfactorily.
On the state of economy, Mr Skinner said the disturbing fact concerning overseas borrowing was that the loans had to be repaid and this
meant so far. the raising of more and more money at higher rates of interest to finance the repayments of previous loans.
“If the money can be obtained overseas and if our export income continues to increase at a satisfactory rate this may not seem to be a problem,” he said. To any ordinary person or organisation it would be a matter for great concern if they were unable to repay their borrowings out of income in the foreseeable future.
Mr Skinner has been re-elec-ted unopposed for his 13th term as president. Mr E. Isbey is unopposed as vice-president as are the secretary, Mr W. J. ■Knox and national councillor, Mr A. Russ. Ten nominations have been received for the seven seats on the executive. Sitting members are Messrs H. Callagher, W. Millar, A. Russ, R. L. Whalley, R. J. Gunn, G. Hagan and H. Irvine. The others nominated are Messrs G. H. Andersen, J. H. Hill and H. Kay.
