PROTECTION OF SCHOOLS
Private Agency Suggested <X.Z. Press Association> WELLINGTON, Oct. 19. The Wellington Education Board has been advised by the Mana Education Association, a private security agency to undertake regular security checks on schools. Mrs P. Jenkins, a board member, said it would be a retrograde step to employ such an agency. “We as taxpayers should expect the police force to protect the schools,” she said. “It is wrong to pay education money for the protection of) public property.”
Mr T. A. Bullock said the board should press the Police Department for better protection of schools. It would be better to direct funds to the police than to employ a security agency. Mr A. G. Goldsmith said there was a need to focus attention on the fact that that there was too much vandalism on schools. “Without being critical of the police, they still appear to be unable to supply the kind of protection that a private agency would be able to supply,” he said. It was decided to refer the question of security generally to the next conference of , the Association of Education Boards.
