A total of more than £230,000 was paid for 136 animals sold at the Hereford pedigree cattle “sale of the century” this week. The sale, attended by 5000 British and overseas visitors, broke seven records.

The average of £1696 7s 4d was a world record for an auction sale. The total for 136 lots was a record average for the home farm sale of Herefords.

A price of £15,750 was a record price for a Hereford bull at an auction. The price paid for a heifer calf was another record.

Top price at the sale, which lasted for more than six hours, was £15.750 for Vern Scorpio, a yearling bull. Although most of the animals were retained in this country, overseas buyers paid £45.000 for a number of lots. Mr Leslie Lewis, one of the home buyers, paid 12,000gns, the second highest price, for a young bull, Vern Root!.
