OTIRA GORGE BUS BAN
Approval By Roads Board
(From Our Otrn Reporter) WELLINGTON, Oct. 20.
A by-law prohibiting passenger service vehicles from travelling on the summit of Arthur’s Pass to Barrack creek (near Otira) section of the ChristchurchKumara State highway has been approved by the National Roads Board.
The by-law, which will come into force as soon as gazetted, states that on this section of the highway no person shall drive or operate any passenger-service vehicle exceeding 2| tons. The penalty on summary conviction is £2O. The chairman (the Minister of Works, Mr Allen): Everyone is against us on this one. The chief highways engineer (Mr F. A. Langbein): It is not fair to say that everyone is against us. We were supported by the Transport Department, by the drivers and by “The Press.” Mr Langbein explained that there was “a very real danger,” in attempting to improve two of the corners, and that in any case improvement would be minimal. “The road is sub-standard for buses,” Mr Langbein said. “It would be a major operation to make it safe. The board can see for itself when it visits the road in February.”
