Australia was beaten, 17-14. by North-east Counties in the opening match of its Rugby tour of the British Isles yesterday. It was the first time the Counties had beaten an international touring team. North-east snatched the victory two minutes from the end when the Yorkshire full-back. D. Bell, kicked a long penalty goal. The penalty was first awarded on the half-way line but was brought forward 10 yards when the Australians failed to retreat quickly enough to satisfy the referee, Mr K. John.
