INSANITY VERDICT
Murderer Of Verwoerd
(N.ZP.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CAPE TOWN, Oct. 20. The judge in the Verwoerd assassination trial today ruled that Demetrio Tsafendas was mentally disordered, and committed him for detention in gaol at the State President’s pleasure. Judge Andries Beyers gave the decision on the fourth day of the trial after hearing evidence from two prosecution medical witnesses. Tsafendas, aged 48, a parliamentary messenger knifed Dr. Verwoerd in Parliament on September 6. Defence counsel brought five psychiatrists to testify that Tsafendas should be certified as insane and unfit to plead to the murder charge against him. The medical evidence brought by the prosecution tallied in large measure with the testimony of the defence psychiatrists—that Tsafendas was a schizophrenic who should be put away.
