PLAYER AND COACH

Appointment Opposed

A member of the Canterbury Softball Association, Mr G. Senior, on Tuesday eveing voted against the appointment of Miss N. Beale as senior women’s representative coach this season. Mr Senior said that he wished his vote recorded because he was against the policy of appointing a playercoach. Miss Beale is a current representative. “A player on second base, attempting to get to third, cannot advise a player coming in to bat,” he said. Miss Beale was appointed after a ballot. The other nominee was Mr G. Griffin. Mr W. Anderton, who coached Papanui to its 1965-66 senior men’s championship, was appointed coach of the Canterbury men’s team.

Selectorlal and coaching appointments for 1966-157 were: Senior Men. —Selectors: Messrs Anderton and R. Marshall. Coach: Mr Anderton. Senior Women. —Selectors: Mr Griffin, Misses B. Makinson and Beale. Coach: Miss Beale. Colts.—Selectors: Messrs P. J. Joyce and R. James. Coach: Mr James.

Senior B Women. —Selector: Miss L. A. Leask. Coach Mr Griffin <if available). Second Grade Women.—Selec-tor-coach: Miss L.. A. Leask. Third Grade Women.—Selec-tor-coach: Miss M. Hapuku. Inter-Club Series.—The two Canterbury representatives in the New Zealand senior men’s inter-club series for the John Lennon Trophy, Papanui and Richmond, will next play in the zone matches at Blenheim on January 21. Should they prove successful they would then advance to the inter-zone (South Island) final at Christchurch on February 11. The national final will be played at Auckland on March 3.

Representative Draw. —It is possible that three challenges for the Jeffries Cup, the symbol of South Island senior men’s supremacy, will be played this season. Challenges from Marlborough (February 25) and Southland (March 11) were approved. The secretary (Mrs M. Gray) will contact Otago to find whether it is willing to challenge on February 4. All challenges will be played in Christchurch. Should Otago refuse February 4 an invitation will be extended to Wellington to play in Christchurch on that date. An away match will be played against Marlborough at Blenheim on March 25.
