Some Grooming Hints

To be really confident this summer, resolve now to improve your grooming habits. This is easy if you keep a few basic rules.

Have your hair shaped and trimmed. The beach is no place to show off straggly locks and split ends. Your hairdresser will give you a style that will look attractive even when the hair is wet.

A Christchurch hairdresser, Mr Bryon Jones, says that regular thorough brushing with a clean, natural bristle or nylon and natural bristle brush—not plastic bristles—is essential.

“This stimulates the oil glands, spreads the natural oil through the hair and removes surplus dust,” he says.

Mr Jones also recommends frequent massages and the use of shampoos with a lanoline base and hair conditioners.

“Avoid over-shampooing and oil treatments. If you swim a lot in salt water always rinse the hair immediately afterwards with cold, fresh water. This removes the salt and prevents the hair from drying out so much,” he says. Soft perms which give body wave and can be combed into place without setting are useful. But a good cut is vital. Now that wiglets are on the market, problem hair is no longer a problem. You just dry the hair after a swim and pin in a wiglet. Complexion care is a must. This starts with a clean face. Try using only moisturiser, lip

gloss or pale lipstick and waterproof mascara. Tan slowly. Do not damage your skin with dryness or a bad sunburn. Always keep suntan lotion handy. It will also prevent windburn. Good grooming also includes exercise. This can be fun. Try walking along the sea shore or look for shells. Do lots of bending from the waist. Keep your stomach in, your shoulders back, and your head high.

With everything under control the next thing is to plan your leisure time. There are plenty of things to do. Organise water polo or volley ball in the pool. Try a cycling party with your friends. Do not forget a picnic lunch. Also popular are water skiing, surfing and barbeques.
