Rating Law Moves “Fiddling Around”
(New Zealand Preet Association) HAMILTON, October 19. The Government, with its proposals to reform the local body rating law, was just “fiddling around with a lot of administrative detail,” said Mr O. H. Wilton, president of the Federation of Ratepayers and Residents, in Hamilton yesterday.
He was commenting on the 158 clause Rating Bill, at present before the Local Bills Committee.
The bill, which will not be passed this year, does not, according to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) contain any new rating systems.
Because of this Mr Wilton considers the Government is failing in its duty. “The Minister admits there is to be no change in the rating system, and without such change the removal of present injustices is impossible,” he said. “Rating cannot be equitable until the system is changed. Everything at present is
loaded on to the property owners—lt’s just like having different prices for petrol depending on the type of car. “To my knowledge there is widespread disappointment over this virtual failure to boldly reform our outdated rating laws.”
