Carnival And Jumping Show

A fun carnival and horse jumping show will be another major attraction at the Rangiora show grounds on the Monday. Organised jointly by the Rangiora Chapter of Jaycees and the Junior Committee of the Canterbury area of the New Zealand Horse Society, the fixture has become a popular feature of the Labour week-end activities in Rangiora. The championship parade of the North Canterbury Association will be held in conjunction with this programme also.

Profits from the carnival and jumping show will be shared equally by the Jaycees and the Junior committee of the horse society. The Jaycees plan to use their share of the profit for another community development project. Its latest work in this field has been to equip a children’s play ground at a cost of £3OO excluding untold hours of voluntary labour. The junior committee of the horse society will contribute most of its share to a fund to help finance an equestrian team to the next Olympic Games at Mexico.

Record entries have been received for the jumping show, exceeding the 242 of last year. Contributing to this has been that many of the visiting competitors for the Northern A. and P. Association centennial show have decided to stop over for further competition on the Monday. Because of this some outstanding competition is expected. A major event will be the South Island juvenile show jumping championship. This will be decided on two rounds—table A. a lowered type Olympic course; and table C, a tight speed course. Twenty-four entries have been received for this event An outstanding competitor will be 19 year old Miss Annette Baxter, on Delmont Lad, with which she won the New Zealand pony club championships in May. Busy Day

Competition will begin at 830 a.m. and is expected to finish about 4.30 p.m. A direct television broadcast will be given from 2 p.m.

One of the South Island selectors, Mrs B. G. Rutherford, Waikari, will observe

the jumping show with a view, to including likely competi-l tors in a six-man team to com-1 pete in a North Island circuit,) with the main feature being; the Horse of the Year Show at; Levin and a match against the) North Island. A varied programme of I entertainments and sideshows) has been arranged by the Jaycees. Carrying a first prize) of £l5, a Miss North Canterbury beauty contest will be 1 one of the features. The winner of this event will be sponsored into the Miss Canterbury contest if desired. Entries will be taken up to just before the contest. Novelty Events The programme should provide plenty of excitement for there will be wood chopping events; a race amongst a race) horse, a go-kart, a motor carl and a motor bike, with Rangi-

ora personalities being among the drivers; displays of marching by the Rangiora marching teams; working traction engines, with rides on trailers for the children; a display of vintage cars: and a display by the Rangiora Volunteer Fire Brigade. Children who may feel in. spired by the skills of competitors in the horse jumping events may test their aptitude for horse riding in more sedate fashion with pony rides. As well there will be a poster competition for school children with a prize of 15 in books to the best school entry and small prizes for the individual winners of each section. . . . and if all this is not enough there will be a host of sideshows, merry-go-round, and similar entertainments, including pillow fighting on a log.
