Dentists’ Fees
Sir. — After receiving my account for dental services, I was shocked to find that the amount owing was £B4O-0. The statement read: Check up, 12-6; 5 fillings at £l-1-0, £5-5-0; 2 fillings at 12-6, £l-5-0:1 filling at £l-7-6; Total, £B-10-0. It is no wonder that so many New Zealanders wear dentures, for the fees for dental services are exorbitant. Having heard that dentistry is the highest-paid profession in New Zealand, I, for one, am prepared to believe it.—Yours J. C. WICKS. October 14, 1966. [Mr H. S. Wilkinson, press liaison officer for the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Dental Association, replies: “These fees closely approximate those paid by the Government for similar organised services and treatment for children 12 to 16 years of age, and would not be excessive for the hours of surgery time involved. Also, after his first examination, any patient in doubt about fees would be expected to make inquiry as to the extent of the work involved.”]
