Cheviot Hospital

Sir, —Since neither the North Canterbury Hospital Board nor the present Government appears to feel obliged to ensure that the residents of Cheviot county continue to be provided with adequate medical facilities, it seems that iome ’ocal action is called for. I understand that the hospital is now threatened with being without any permanent nursing staff. The closure of the hospital, followed by the departure of the doctor and the chemist, are nearer to reality than the nightmare they seem. If this happens, outraged protests will be too late to relieve unnecessary suffering. Surely, in a democracy, united action by the genuinely aggrieved people of a prosperous farming community must achieve something.—Yours, etc., JILL AMER.
