PAPEETE (Tahiti), Oct. 12.
The Gaullist Mayor of Papeete was ousted from office for the first time in 24 years this week by a candidate who opposes the testing of French nuclear weapons in the South Pacific. An anti-bomb “backlash” was credited with having unseated Mr Alfred Poroi, Mayor of Papeete, since 1942. Mr Poroi also represents the city in the French Senate. Mr M. T. Pambrun, who ran on an anti-bomb ticket won the election.
