Chief Justice To Visit City In November
The Chief Justice (Sir Richard Wild) will make his first visit to Christchurch in November, it was announced yesterday at the opening of the fourth and final session of the Supreme Court this year.
Sir Richard Wild will preside at the Supreme Court during the week beginning November 21.
The Supreme Court session opened yesterday, before Mr Justice Macarthur, with the presentation of nine indictments on criminal charges, against eight persons. Three weeks had been allowed for the trial of these cases, his Honour said. The indictments, in order of trial, are:— Dangerous driving causing death; receiving stolen goods (three counts); perjury; attempted unlawful sexual intercourse; theft: burglary; indecent assault; theft as a servant; indecent assault (two counts). Further Criminal Cases
Further criminal cases—and any not disposed of in the above list —will be tried in the week beginning November 21, when Sir Richard Wild will be on the Bench. Two weeks from November 28 have been set down for the hearing of civil jury cases.
Apart from the fortnight beginning October 31, when Mr Justice Macarthur will sit on the Supreme Court bench in Auckland, two judges will be available in Christchurch throughout the session. This is made possible by the visit of Sir Richard Wild, which will occur while Mr
Justice Wilson is undertaking the West Coast circuit.
Mr Justice Macarthur, at yesterday’s opening of the session, asked members of the legal profession to study carefully the administrative directions in connexion with the new system of “ready lists” of court business.
“This system enables the court to keep an up-to-date record of current business, and ensures that it is disposed of as quickly as possible,” his Honour said.
