POLICY CLARIFIED Yacht Moorings To Remain
By a yachting correspondent >
A clarification of the Lyttelton 11 arbour Board’s policy on y acht moorings in the harbour was given by the chairman of the board (Mr L. G. Amos) at the opening of the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club’s season.
Members greeted with enthusiasm the statement that there will be no more, and no fewer yacht moorings in the inner harbour, and that those there now could well remain for the next 20 years. Earlier, the club had had an unofficial warning that the area would be required within
the next two or three years for harbour development. Referring to the list of 60 people waiting for moorings. Mr Amos said that the board would support supplementary moorings at Cass Bay if that was shown to be safe. He also said he would person- ' ally support the provision of ! haul-out facilities for the big I yachts. With modern methods, Mr Amos said, a 12,000-ton ves- , sei could be completely un'loaded in a day. so that less i wharf space was required. I The club will at last feel j secure to proceed with plans I for development, and with Mr j Amos’s reassurances, a big in- ; crease in the number of keeli ers can be expected. ; The full potential for offj shore cruising and racing is I dependent on a secure anch- '! orage: it seems that the board lis now prepared to see this ■ j need and do something practical about it. ; The Auckland Harbour ! Board provides three yacht 1 i harbours and there are two at Wellington, also provided by the harbour board.
