Book Prices
Sir,—May I make two points in reply to the statement by Mr C. Cameron of the Associated Booksellers of New Zealand? First, the cost of getting books to New Zealand is not 20 per cent, unless the booksellers are using airfreight. which the service they offer does not suggest. On recent consignments of books which I have received from Britain, postage and packing has averaged just over 5 per cent, and presumably booksellers, receiving larger quantities are more favourably placed than the individual in this respect. Second, while wages may be higher here than in Britain, this is but one part of the cost of selling books and is not by itself a valid argument for higher prices, a detailed comparison of all the costs of selling books here and elsewhere might be. but Mr Cameron has not offered us one. Yours, etc., P. J. PERRY. Department of Geography, University of Canterbury. October 9, 1966.
