MORE INTEREST IN GIRLS
English Public Schools Survey (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, October 10. Homosexuality in Britain’s public schools had declined over the last 30 years, the headmaster of Rugby, Dr. W. Hamilton, said today. The reason for the decline, he said, was that boys were much more interested in girls today than when he was young. He emphasised that much of what was called homosexuality might not be described as such outside the schools.
Dr. Hamilton was speaking as chairman of the Headmasters’ Conference at a press conference in London on “The Public Schools: A Factual Survey.” published today. The survey carried out by Mr Kalton, of the London School of Economics, had cost schools belonging to the conference more than £3OOO.
The survey itself gives no statistics on the sexual life of public school boys. But in t ! an introduction, a fellow of King’s College, Cambridge. Mr | R. Lambert, says: “This par-| ticular mode of sexual emo-! tional adjustment is not con-1 fined to public schools and certainly does not appear uniformly among them. or' among any other schools for that matter.”
Mr Kalton. in his survey, said that a small minority of boarding schools thought that the opportunity of seeing girls in the school holidays was enough, but the vast majority of schools sponsored some opportunities for their boys to meet girls.
The survey also revealed that in four schools there were more than 350 canings in a year.
of 109 schools with boarders caning was used by the i masters on fewer than 20 1 occasions in 38 schools, but in ! 12 it was used on more than ' 100 occasions.
