SURGERY ON BOY
172nd Gullet Operation "The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, October 10. An operation to bypass a damaged gullet is to be performed by a team of Auckland surgeons on a 10-year-old Mount Wellington boy, Ray Marsom. Surgery will be nothing new for the boy who, since he swallowed caustic soda at the age of 14 months, has undergone 171 operations, many of them minor, to clear his gullet. A member of the team of specialists in consultation over the operation said it involved replacing the gullet with a piece of the large bowel. Similar operations had been performed in Auckland. The boy’s mother said his gullet had now closed to a stage where he had difficulty in swallowing.
