OFFER TO AUCKLAND
D’Oggiono Painting “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, October 10. A painting of the Madonna and Child by Marco d’Oggiono, one of the most outstanding pupils of Leonardo da Vinci, is on offer to the Auckland City Art Gallery. The Mackelvie Trust has offered to put £3OOO toward the cost of the painting, the National Art-Collections Fund of Britain has agreed to find £lOOO and the Auckland City Council finance committee will decide this week whether to pay the balance of £l5OO from the improvement trust fund. Works by d’Oggiono, who lived from 1475 to 1519, are displayed by many famous art galleries, including the Louvre and the National Gallery in London. If the painting comes to Auckland it will fill a gap in the present collection because there is no first-class High Renaissance painting of the type. The painting is from the collection of Lord Morgadale of Ismay. The chairman of the Mackelvie Trust, Mr G. Rix-Trott, said the painting would be a truly excellent buy if it was acquired.
