RACING £27 DOUBLE

Manana-Kalimera At Rangiora

Manana and Kalimera won a T.A.B. double vyorth £27 14s 6d for £1 for Riccarton stables at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting at Rangiora yesterday.

There were 7621 5s tickets on the successful combination.

Kalimera was first fancy in win-and-place betting, but at much longer odds on the double than Manana’s stablemate, Shipmate, which was at less than double figures with Manana. Shipmate faded to fifth after pacemaking, but Time and Tide, another member of the J. C. Tomkinson team, looked likely to come out on top until the last stride or two. Kalimera gamely responded( to a hard ride from W. D. ( Skelton, to beat Time and Tide by a head. Manana had a hard chase after the pacemaking Clipper for his win in the Booths Gin Handicap, but his class shone through at the end and he came out on top by a neck, | Manana was in the top rankl as a sprinter earlier in his career. But with a bit of; age be has developed into a competent middle-distance performer. His win yesterday came at his first start since he won the Islington Handicap over, the same distance on the final i

I day of the Grand National j meeting. I Earlier in the year Manana ■won the Waimate Cup. Good Pace i Manana started from the outside in the Booths Gin (Handicap, but if A. J. Stokes | had any fears of being forced I wide early they disappeared when Clipper went out to make a good gallop in front. Stokes was able to guide Manana over to the rails in (third to last position ahead of Misjudge and Royal Bid. K. A. Aitken allowed Clipper to run away to a lead of two lengths and a half going to the six furlongs. Etoile Este and Gold Shower were no closer to him at the three furlongs, but Manana had got closer to reach fourth position just ahead of General Gilbert, which was already wilting. Manana was within a length | of Clipper on the home turn; and he took a short lead near! the furlong. Clipper put up plucky resistance, but the Riccarton gelding had him safely covered for a neck victory. Seminole, the place favourite, improved a solid re-1

I cord on the course with a (good third another neck back. A minor feature of the race was the run of the top-weight, Royal Bid, into fourth place. He was a long way off the pace until late in the race. The others, led in by Takatua, were beaten off. Second Leg Kalimera and Time and Tide battled it out for the honours in the Ronald Macdonald Memorial clear of the other sprinters. Time and Tide ran at the quarters of his pacemaking stablemate, Shipmate, around to the home turn, and was ridden hard into a clear lead on straightening. But he just failed to last it out in the face of a dogged challenge from Kalimera, which was making her first winning run in open class. Kalimera started her winning run from about four positions back. Early Dawn came up with |an encouraging fresh run for his third. He found enough (pace to trail all the way to (the straight, and he was in no danger of losing third although Her Pal picked up ground for fourth. Shipmate weakened to fifth I a length in front of Glamis I Lad.
