COAL-POWER STATION
Smoke Tests At Sites (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 10. Smoke tests would soon begin at New Plymouth and Wanganui as part of investigations to choose the site for the coal-fired power station, the Electricity Department’s assistant chief engineer (Mr R J. Fyfe) said today. A smoke rocket was testfired in Wellington today. Although New Plymouth has been recommended as the site for the station, Wanganui is still being considered as an alternative. Mr Fyfe said it was also hoped to use aircraft in the smoke tests to be conducted by the Meteorological Service. Smoke would be released at different levels during varying wind conditions to show the effect of drift to determine the height of the chimneys. Engineers had calculated that stacks about 600 ft high would be needed at the New Plymouth site near Paritutu. Actual smoke tests would aid the calculations. Mr Fyfe had informal talks with Taranaki Harbour Board officials this afternoon.
