Three Records Fall At Christ’s College Sports

Three records and perform- a ances of remarkable consisten- g cv by P. Alexander, S. W. Cowles and T. R. Archibald in fr winning the senior, intermedi- N ate and under-14 championships c lifted the level of the Christ’s c College athletic sports a little t above the ordinary on Saturday. A A heavy surface for the first * two sessions of championship finals ruled out much chance c of records and on Saturday, in J spite of sun and a light to e moderate wind, the ground was > still slightly holding for most , of the programme. r In the afternoon, before about r 700 spectators, Cowles ran 440 t yards in 52.9 sec to clip o.9sec off the record set by R. V. v Nicholl in 1946. The talented 15- S year-old Cowles, who belongs to I ho athletic club and has hither- J to concentrated on cricket dur- I ing the summer, had made sure s of the intermediate champion- c ship early in the day but he \ went on to win every race from i 100 to 880 yards and accumulate 20 points—nearly twice as s many as the runner-up, M. \ Hobbs. 1 Cowles hardly felt the pinch J of competition, though there : was a hot challenge in the 100 yards, which he won by a yard. In his other three races the nar- * rowest margin between first and second was 10 yards. Cowles . completed a notable double—last year, when he was junior champion, he also made a clean sweep of the running events. P. D. Jeffreys, joint runnerup in the junior championship, 1 and T. R. Archibald, the under- 1 14 champion, both bettered per- i formances in events which 2 were held for the first time last \ year. Jeffreys was timed at 13.2 q sec in the 80 metres hurdles ( and Archibald managed 16ft s s}in in the long jump. y Jeffreys, in the second stage j of the sports on Friday, had to- | contend with a heavy field when he cut a fraction of a second off P. Tocker’s record. He had s concentrated on the event in <j training and at the inter-school < sports earlier in the year re- j corded 12.7 sec. The junior title j was won by P. J. Wales under j considerable pressure from Jeff- j reys and P. H. Cook, who was j first in the half-mile and mile. ( Wales was challenged hotly over , the shorter distances. ( The senior and under-14 chain- j nions, P. Alexander and Archi- j bald, were in a class of their , own. Both gained twice as many * points as the runners-up. The 1 previous week Alexander had t won the three miles by a clear ■ 50 yards, and on Saturday in , both the 880 yards, in which he led from the and the mile, in which he took the lead

at half-way, he had no challengers. The Canterbury sprinter and New Zealand champion, D. W. Mackenzie, was heavily handicapped in the old boys’ race over 120 yards, but went through the field to finish third. M. F. Poulson was first in 17.9 sec and C. S. Kernahan took second place. The college champions were: Senior: P. Alexander, 20 points; runners-up, R. Utley and D. Watson, 10. Intermediate: S. W. Cowles, 18; runner-up, M. Hobbs, 10. Junior: P. Wales, 12: run-ners-up, P Cook and P. D. Jeffreys, 11. Under-14: T. R. Archibald, 12; runner-up, L. Smart, 6. The house championship cup was won by Harper House with 81 points. Second was Julius house (46 points) and third Jacobs house (43). Harper house also won the inter-house standards cup with 41.5 per cent. The house relay cup was won by Jacobs house with 21 points. Trophies and prizes were presented by Mrs N. A. H. Creese/ wife of the college headmaster. Mr Creese said that some of the prizes were not available because of the shipping strike in England. Also present at the sports and prize-giving were the college warden (the Biishop of Christchurch, the Rt. Rev. W. A. Pyatt) and Mrs Pyatt. Results were: Championship Senior 100 yards: R. Utley 1, N.
