ALLIANCE PARTY WIN IN FIJI
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SUVA, October 10. With only three results outstanding, the multi-racial Alliance Party has won 20 of the 34 seats in Fiji’s first Legislative Council election under the new constitution.
The three independents elected support the Alliance Party although they are not officially endorsed by the party. The Federation Party has eight seats and one of the remaining three seats is regarded as a safe Federation seat. The other two, one of which is Ratu K. K. T. Mara’s, will almost certainly go to the Alliance Party. Ratu Mara is the party’s president. There will be two women in the new Legislative Coun-
cil, the first in Fiji’s history
They are Miss Jai Narayan, a Suva school teacher who won the Suva Indian communal seat for the Federation Party, and Miss Loma Livingston, a former nursing sister who won the Western crossvoting general seat as an independent supporter of the Alliance Party. New members of the council include three brothers, the sons of late Ratu George Tonganivalu, who served with New Zealand forces under the name of George Brown in the First World War.
