President Johnson’s Visit
Sir,—No doubt Hitler was regarded as some kind of George Washington by the German people at the beginning of the last war. Does “One of the Minority” dare to presume he was less of a barbaric madman for being popular? It is the nuclear facts of life which force President Johnson to merely contain the Communist seourge rather than extinguish it as finally as the Allies extinguished Nazism. It is this very atmosphere of limited warfare that provides the environment for the flourishing of apologists for the enemies of mankind. How else does one describe an opportunist repeatedly rebuffing peace offers with intransigent and arrogant war howls? It scarcely needs repeating that the demonstrations, as in the past, will achieve nothing. Anti-Vietnam demonstrations are merely expressions of a minority frustrated at being unable to deceive the majority. The essence of democracy is that majority will prevails. So be it, and long live the President!—Yours, THE MAJORITY. October 10, 1966.
