HUTT MAIL SERVICES
Changes Under Consideration GW.Z. Press Association > WELLINGTON. October 9. Private contractors are likely to be used in the Hutt Valley to clear mail boxes, other than at post offiices. Notices have appeared in Hutt Valley post offices recently inviting tenders from private contractors. Tenders close on October 21 and a decision on whether to proceed with the scheme will be made on November 21. Some months ago there was an inquiry into postal services in the Hutt Valley following complaints by the Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Lower Hutt Businessmen’s Association. Another development thought to be under study by the Post Office is the introduction of mail delivery by motor vehicles in hiliy areas. The senior inspector of the Lower Hutt postal division last week completed a trial on the eastern hills of the Hutt Valley to measure the value of a vehicular delivery compared with the current method of bicycling and on foot. No announcement has been made whether these developments in mail delivery will be adopted elsewhere in New Zealand.
