TALKS WITH MINISTERS
Woollen Mills’ Future
(N.Z. Press Association > WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. The Minister of Customs (Mr Shelton) and the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) will meet representatives of the woollen-milling industry next week to discuss the industry’s future. In Parliament todav Mr Shelton told Mr W. W.'Freer (Opp., Mount Albert) that the industry had requested the appointment. “Naturally, we want to see a healthy woollen industry in New Zealand,” said Mr Shelton. x Earlier, Sir Basil Arthur; (Opp., Timaru)—referring to the recent report of the Tariff Board on light-weight woollen piece goods—asked why the Government so readily adopted a report which was so obviously harmful to the New Zealand industry.
“The Government adopted the report on the board’s assurance that the woollen-mill-ing industry would not be unduly harmed by freeing woollen fabrics under s)oz a square yard from import licensing.” said Mr Shelton, “The industry supplies the major part of the heavier weight cloths where there is room for further expansion.”
