R.N.Z.N. SHIP

Blackpool Ready

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. Sept. 28. The frigate Blackpool (Commander J. I. Quinn, R.N.Z.N.) has completed her work up at Portland in the south of England after a strenuous final day in which she took part in high-speed

manoeuvres with six other ships in company.

With the ship at “war state” Blackpool was "attacked” by two submarines, fuelled and transferred personnel by jackstay at sea and fired on surface and air targets. The Navy said in a statement today that the ship also had personnel transferred by helicopter, took part in a chemical warfare and damage control exercise and carried out seamanship evolutions. At the end of the eightweek work up the Flag Officer Sea Training, Rear-Admiral P. G. Sharp, said: “This is a happy ship which has completed a good work up.” Blackpool is due to sail for the Far East next month.
