MILEAGE FOR DOCTORS

Rise To 2s 6d Suggested A proposal that the mileage rate for country doctors be 2s 6d, compared with the present rate of Is 3d. was advanced at a meeting of the executive of North Canterbury Federated Farmers yesterday. No action was taken, the president (Mr R. H. Bedford) suggesting that the question be referred to district branches.

Mr J. H. A. Hollis, of Ha warden, said country doctors were difficult to obtain because a doctor's earning ability was so much greater in the city. To get adequate medical coverage in rural areas the mileage rate of Is 3d, originally set In 1940. should be doubled to compensate for lost time.

It had been estimated that this would cost New Zealand £200,000 a year. Mr Hollis said. According to statistics compiled by the New Zealand branch of the British Midical Association, there were 39 rural medical practices available.

He inquired whether there was a problem in any other areas similar to one experienced recently at Hawarden, and said he would be prepared to put forward a remit at the executive’s next meeting.
