Colour Printing By New Method

“The Press’’ today for the first time prints an advertisement in colour by a method which has only recently become available to newspapers. The system, which is known as gravure pre-print advertising was begun in the United States about three years ago.

The advertisements are printed on a rotary gravure press before the publication day of the newspaper; and the roll of pre-printed material replaces one of the normal rolls of newsprint on the newspaper’s rotary press News and advertising are printed on the other side of the sheet in the normal course of production. The technique is now being used by leading newspapers in Britain, and also in Australia. Complicated arrangements had to be made by “The Press” in preparing for the gravure pre-print method. There is no plant in New Zealand capable of making the cylinders on which the material is pre-printed, and the only gravure machine in New Zealand is that owned and operated by E. S. and A. Robinson (N.Z.), Ltd., of New Lynn. ’With the co-operation of this firm, the “Melbourne Herald” gravure, and a firm of cylinder makers in Sydney, “The Press” is printing this advertisement on behalf of Anthony Squires, of Auck-

land. Charles Haines Advertising, Ltd., has been closely associated with the project. A special paper, imported from Australia, is being used, and quility and presentation are confidently believed to be up to the best standard in the world for this class of advertising.
