U.K. Ombudsman Visiting N.Z.

(New Zealand Press Association)

AUCKLAND, September 19.

The man who will soon become the first British ombudsman, Sir Edmund Compton, arrived in New Zealand today to study how Sir Guy Powles, his New Zealand equivalent, fills his office.

Sir Edmund Compton, whose official title is Parliamentary Commisisoner designate, said his position had been based largely on the New Zealand Ombudsman. “Under the bill before the British Parliament the powers are much the same,” he said. “There is the one limitation you do not have in New Zealand—that the complaints must come through a member of Parliament.” For this reason he was making a hurried visit to New Zealand, before the British Parliament reconvened and passed the bill, creating his office, to meet Sir Guy Powles and to discuss his position with him.

Sir Edmund Compton said his position would be started on a fairly limited basis. He gave up the position of Auditor-General in Britain,

which he had filled for eight years, to take up his new role. Previously, he spent 25 years in the Treasury Department.
