EXHIBITION OF BOOKS

Opening By Dame Ngaio Marsh (from the London Correapndt. of •‘The Pratt” > LONDON, September 12. The fourth Commonwealth hooks exhibition to be held in London by the National Book League will take place in New Zealand House next month. The New Zealand author. Dame Ngaio Marsh, is to open the exhibition to a private audience on October 5.

Apart from her talents as a writer of detective stories, Dame Ngaio Marsh has recently published her autobiography “Black Beech and Honey Dew” (Collins), a fascinating account of her life in the Dominion and her involvement with the theatre. For the exhibition, 1000 books, selected by Commonwealth publishers, will be displayed under seven headings: Commonwealth science and technology; fiction drama and poetry; politics; biography; travel and description: children’s books; and celebrities’ choice.

In the last category will be a small section of books chosen as favourite reading by outstanding personalities in the Commonwealth. A special display of historically interesting documents, maps and early books relating to New Zealand has been gathered for the occasion.

The previous three Commonwealth Books exhibitions have been held at Marlborough House, the London setting for the Prime Ministers’ meeting, and also now the home of the Commonwealth Secretariat. The 1966 exhibition will continue for three weeks at New Zealand House and then tour the country.
