Caldwell Turns Professional

Another important addition has been made to the ranks of New Zealand’s professional golfers. The prominent Christchurch club player, C. W. Caldwell, will begin duties as assistant to N. H. Fuller at Shirley next month.

Caldwell has been club champion at Christchurch nine times, and in a recent club match had a round of 67, six under scratch. Twice in Christmas tournaments he has scored 68s at Shirley, and he has a good Freyberg Rose-

bowl record. In his three years in Hawke’s Bay, he was champion of the Napier Club three times.

Caldwell appeared twice for Hawke’s Bay In Freyberg games before returning to Christchurch. Although he was sometimes not available for selection, he has appeared for Canterbury in seven Freyberg tournaments since 1955, winning 24 and halving four of his 42 games.

Caldwell’s appearances in competitive golf at the top level have been intermittent, and he has played in only four amateur championships. At Invercargill in 1960 he was a semi-finalist, and he is regarded by top golfers throughout the country as having one of the finest techniques.

Caldwell will play in the New Zealand Open at Paraparaumu Beach in November, but he will not be eligible to play in other events as a professional for 18 months. He is 38 years old.

Caldwell has been a member of the Christchurch Club since 1944.
