Life In Russia

Sir, —Yes, Russia is doing splendidly. Human beings thrive under good firm discipline. Everyone has a vote, and must cast it for a candidate chosen already by a strong one-party government. No strikes (I should jolly well think not): no election bribery. Be an obedient citizen (or writer)—or take the consequences. Russia is now a fine colonialising empire—from the Rhine and Danube to Siberia, Manchuria, and Mongolia. All the same. I'd sooner be here, personally, thank your very much.— Yours, etc., L.G.P. September 18, 1966.
