Methane In Space

(N.Z. F. A. -Rsufer—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Sept. 18. Experiments by two University of Houston chemists suggest that big planets such as Jupiter and Saturn may be gigantic “oil” refineries. In a report in the journal, “Science,” the chemists, Dr. J. Oro and Dr. J. Han, said high-temperature experiments with methane indicated oil refinery-like activity may occur in the solar system. Methane belongs to a class o< chemical compounds called hydrocarbons. On earth, it is derived from the refining (or boiling down) of such substances as petroleum, natural gas, coal, asphalt and tar. But the solar system also abounds with methane. It is an important component of comets and the great planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
