HIT AND RUN

A man suffered fatal head injuries when he was struck by a car in Victoria street a short distance north-west of the floral clock by a car which did not stop about 1.15 a.m. yesterday.

The dead man was not identified until last evening but the police withheld his name until his relatives have been notified.

A car stopped to give way to a man who was crossing the street when another car passed the stationary vehicle and struck the pedestrian, throwing him some distance into the gutter.

The iniured man was taken to the Christchurch Hospital where he died at 6.45 a.m. yesterday. The driver of the other car chased the hit-and-run motorist who accelerated away from the scene but he was unable to catch him.
