Auckland Win To Full Sovereign

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Full Sovereign, at good odds considering his useful form just before hand at Hutt Park, took the September Handicap, the feature event at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park on Saturday night by a neck from Herby Tryax. Full Sovereign had to survive a protest by D. N. Hayes, the driver of Herby Tryax. The judicial committee found that Full Sovereign had moved out in the last furlong but that the result had not been affected. The September Handicap was the first leg of the T.A.B. double. The second leg, the Takanini Free-for-All, was won decisively by Viking Water. The double paid £97 for £l. The weather was cold and showery, but the track was still in good order. After the Introductory Handicap, J. E. Smith, the driver of Cover On, was fined £lO for failing to be the required distance when crossing over to the rails. L. Purdon was fined £lO for careless driving causing minor interference to Robin’s Return in the Glenfield Handicap. In the September Handicap D. N. Hayes, trainer-driver of Herby Tryax, lodged a protest against Full Sovereign (J. E. Smith) being awarded first place on the grounds of alleged interference. Smith was fined £lO for failing to take corrective action when his horse started to run out.

An inquiry was opened and adjourned into an incident concerning Sparkling Brew and Rapine being put out of the contest in the Franklin Handicap.
