Asia Minor Narrowly

Asia Minor made a successful first appearance for the season when he’ lasted to beat the faster-finishing Johnny Gee in the Ern Smith Handicap. The race was a muddling one for the first two furlongs when most of the leading bunch, including Dispense, Karen Brigade, Morven Lad, and White Martial, made mistakes.

After a furlong and a half Asia Minor was only about three lengths from the leader, Tronso. Uteena went to the front after three furlongs. Half a furlong later Dispense rushed clear, the pace soon slackening. Asia Minor was fourth into the straight, took a short lead soon after, and lasted to beat Johnny Gee by a nose. Johnny Gee was awkwardly placed about four lengths from the lead until late. He did well to be placed. Tronso battled on for third, but she was well beaten. Dispense, Uteena and Morven Lad were right up nekt.

Asia Minor will probably have his next start in the Banks Peninsula Trotting Cup early next month.
