30-Minute Winner
The first home in the 12mile Kaiapoi-to-Christ-church road race on Saturday. 53-year-old J. Drew, did not have long in which to enjoy his victory. Thirty minutes after he had crossed the finishing line, Drew was disqualified by the referee (Mr J. Clark) on the ground that his entry was received late.
It was an outstanding performance by Drew to win the race by several hundred yards from many younger competitors. His entry had been accepted by the Presbyterian club even though it was late, and he was allocated a race number and a handicap and wore a registration number.
