Mr Kirk To The Rescue

The Leader ol the Opposition (Mr Kirk) was first on the scene of an accident on Mount Pleasant road late on Saturday afternoon and rescued the elderly driver of a car that was half over a 40ft bank.

Mrs Kirk, a passenger in her husband’s car, saw the latemodel car swerve over the road. It mounted the footpath and crashed through a wire fence, coming to rest with its left wheels over the bank. She drew her husband’s attention to the accident, and he ran across to the car.

At first Mr Kirk thought the car was on fire, as smoke was pouring from it; but he found that the driver, who had apparently become ill, was slumped in the car with his foot still on the accelerator. Most of the smoke was coming from burning rubber on the back wheels, which were still spinning, he said.

With some difficulty, Mr Kirk, assisted by several other rescuers, got the man out of the car. He was suffering from shock and was taken to his home nearby by Mr and Mrs Kirk.
