PLOUGHING CONTEST
Wakanui Man Qualifies E. J. Croy, of Wakanui, won the Courtenay-Paparua Ploughing Match Association’s qualifying event for the New Zealand silver plough contest next May. Another Wakanui ploughman, R. M. Kingsbury, was second, and P. Carter, of Greenpark, third. The judges, Messrs D. J. Stewart, P. McGiffert, and A. L. Coleman, described Croy’s work as excellent, and “out on its own.” When the New Zealand silver plough final is held the day before the world championship near Christchurch, the winner will become New Zealand’s representative at the world championship in Rhodesia during the autumn of 1968. The qualifying events this spring are not attracting very large fields, because of the clash with lambing. So far four events have been run, three of them in Otago and Southland, where the qualifiers were S. M. Allison (Milton), 1. B. Blair (Mosgiel). and M. Heenan (Invercargill). Only five starters competed in the Courtenay event, held on the property of Mrs A. W Langdale, West Melton. The place getters and their points were:— Croy, feering 29.33 points, weed control 66, finish and ins and outs 63, total 158.33. Kingsbury, 27.66, 58, 60.33. 145 99 Carter, 30.66. 61.33, 53.33. 145,32.
