Single Anti-Litter Code Sought

(Neto Zealand Press Association}

WESTPORT, September 18.

The Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast League of Local Bodies will ask the Municipal and Counties’ Associations to formulate uniform anti-litter legislation and make a joint approach to the Government to have the legislation enacted.

Delegates at the executive meeting in Westport disagree with a letter from the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) saying that a uniform code of anti-litter by-laws already existed in New Zealand. The Mayor of Blenheim (Mr S. P. Harling) said he disagreed with the Minister's contention. “We can’t clean up New Zealand till we have laws which can be enforced,” he said. “In the United States and

Canada one saw signs warning motorists that fines of up to 50 dollars would be imposed for throwing litter on the road.”

Mr Harling said the police were not enforcing anti-litter by-laws effectively. Litter was thrown from cars and dumped in parks and roadsides because there was no restraining legislation.
