BEER IN BOTTLES

Higher Deposit Uneconomic (N.Z. Press Association) WESTPORT, Sept. 18. The Brewers’ Association has found that it would be uneconomical to increase prices of all bottled beer to include a higher refund allowance, the Nelson-Marlborough-West Coast League of Local Bodies has been told. The league had asked the association to consider increasing to 6d the deposit on beer bottles, and to provide “easier refunding facilities.” Members of the league were concerned about the amount of litter, particularly broken bottles, and it was felt that such a move would do much to minimise the nuisance and the danger. The association said that the present price structure for bottled beer was based on the quart and included an allowance for returns. The present allowance collects about 90 per cent bottles.
