The United States challenger. I Gamecock, is two-up in the best; of seven series after a pair ot virtual walk-overs. Twice the defender. Ladyi Helmsman, has been disabled 1 by damaged main beams. > Using Saturday as a rest day., the British team was; strengthening the beam for the third race. The official rules doj not allow any modification. But the American helmsman, j R. Shiels, when asked if he| objected to what is virtually a j structural alteration, replied: j “We came a long way here I to race, and not to win because of an unfortunate accident.’’ ' The tubular beam which, separates the 25ft hulls and sup-! ports a 1401 b wing mast has been strengthened by sleeving and plugging with wood through its entire length.
