TREE NEAR ROAD

Dispute On Future “The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, Sept. 18. A Norfolk pine which the Northcote Borough Council illuminates at Christmas, when it can be seen for miles, is in danger of destruction. The pine is on Northcote Point close to the harbour bridge. The Auckland Harbour Bridge Authority wants to realign the road, take in a piece of private property on which the tree is growing, and cut down the tree. The borough council will tell the authority that it cannot agree to removal of the tree. The council has the say on the realignment. The owner of the tree I wants it to remain. I The secretary-treasurer of I the bridge authority (Mr J. B. Battersby) said when the bridge was widened by four lanes that part of the road beneath would have to be realigned slightly and the tree was in the way. The owner of the tree, Miss J. Grange, was definite that she did not want it removed. The lights on it at Christmas could be seen from all over the city. She thought the tree, which was planted by her grandmother, could be nearly 100 years old. If her land and the tree were taken, she said, she would want compensation not only for the land but also for the tree.
