Early Diagnosis of Cancer

Sir, — I was interested to read the report of an interview with Dr Emerson Day. As one who has had a card at the x-ray department of Wellington Hospital since 1943, 1 wish Dr Day and his associates every success. There is one point on which I differ from him. I am not in the least reluctant to discuss my case and treatment. I cannot

get any listeners. It soon becomes evident that listeners are embarrassed, and it becomes obvious one is regarded as a psycho-neurotic if attempt is made to continue the subject. The average patient regardless of age, is firmly convinced that cancers, like motor accidents, are things that cannot and will not happen to them. Hence both these killers have unnecessarily high mortality rates.— Yours etc. J. D. O’RYAN Inangahua, September 15, 1966.
