RACING Tahu Koura May Be Best Two-Year-Old

The Dunedin Jockey Club begins South Island two-year-old racing today to make the programme for the opening of its spring meeting something better than a run-of-the-mill affair.

The McLean Stakes, run last year in divisions, will be run as an outright contest this year. If barrier sprints in the last few weeks have any bearing on the result, Riccarton’s Tahu Koura and Wingatui’s Red Copy, Heffs, and disk should be strong contenders.

Tahu Koura won the sprint for two-year-old fillies on the third day of the Grand National meeting. Riccarton form could also supply winning leads for other races at Wingatui today. Gladaub and St. Jude were winners for southern stables at the Grand National meeting, and will come in for confident backing today. Gladaub made a successful debut as a hurdler at Riccarton. He was switched back to the flat to win against the sprinters at the Otago Hunt Club’s meeting, but will resume in the role of a jumper today.

Turtle has dropped out of the hurdles field. St Jude, a decisive winner over a mile and a quarter in his only start at the Grand National meeting, looks equal to the task of beating the other hacks over 11 furlongs today. St Jude has the ability, it is felt, to end Polar’s winning sequence, now extending over three races—one at the Otago Hunt meeting followed by a double at Ashburton last week-end. Even Chance and Pharasal probably will be at cramped odds when they attempt to win today’s T.A.B. double for Riccarton stables.

They have earned favouritism after sound wins at Ashburton,

P. J. Silver has been engaged to ride Fontara in the Trial Stakes No. 2 and G. O. Finn has engaged for Grey Satin in the St. Kilda Improvers’ Handicap. Wingatui had fine weather yesterday. The track has improved in the last two days but is still expected to be soft or easy. Fields are:— 11.15 a.m.— TRIAL STAKES No. 1, £225; 7f. —Arctic Lad <9).
