It Depends On The People
AfOST readers of Machiavelli have read only “The Prince,” and so have taken only a part of his message. Thus the word "Machiavellian” has come to be applied to anyone ready to use any means to get power or to extend it, no matter for what purpose. Whereas in fact Machiavelli allowed only all means necessary to the maintenance of effective government; and was well aware that what these means are must always depend on the moral and political condition of the people.—John Plamenatz. lecturer in social and political • theory at Oxford University.
