Maori To Coach
A colourful character around Christchurch pools, Mr H. K. Pitama. will end 11 years as an amateur swimming coach when he becomes a professional instructor in the sport on October 1. It is believed that he Is the first Maori to become a professional sports coach. Mr Pitama. a familiar figure with his cloth cap and stopwatch. has guided 400 children to greater heights in swimming in the last nine years during his activities
at the Ricearton, Spreydon and Wharenui clubs. Now he has accepted a position with the Sockburn Park club, where his biggest task will be the teaching of his methods to a keen group of amateur coaches, several of whom are still in competition. In this way he hopes to achieve depth in the ranks of the club’s competitors. He does not expect spectacular results in his first season, but his aim is to make Sockburn Park the leading swimming club in Canterbury.
